Open to Grace: Total Self-Giving and Holy Matrimony

Abiertos a la Gracia: La Entrega Total y el Santo Matrimonio

A contract protects individual interests; a covenant demands total surrender. The prevailing cultural narrative encourages couples to hold a piece of themselves back as a safety measure—whether it is protecting personal time, dividing finances strictly down the middle, or closing themselves off to the possibility of new life. But the Catholic vision of Holy Matrimony is beautifully radical: it calls for a love that is free, total, faithful, and fruitful (CCC 1643).

Free means that the gift of self is made without coercion or condition. Total means that nothing is withheld—not time, not finances, not the body, not the future. Faithful means that the gift is permanent and exclusive. Fruitful means that the love is ordered toward life, whether biological children, spiritual children, or the apostolic fruit of a holy marriage that radiates outward to the community.

Conjugal generosity is not merely a suggestion; it is a vocation. It means actively resisting the individualistic mindset that constantly asks, "What am I getting out of this relationship?" and replacing it with the Christ-like question, "How can I lay down my life for my spouse today?" This total self-giving mirrors the Paschal Mystery. Christ did not give 50% of Himself on the cross. He gave everything. He held nothing back. This is the model for the covenant.

Trusting God with your fertility and your future requires immense faith. It means believing that God's grace will sustain the family, even when the path is uncertain and the resources feel insufficient. When spouses embrace this unreserved generosity, they build a love that is truly indissoluble—a love that cannot be broken by the inevitable seasons of difficulty, because it was never conditioned on comfort in the first place.

No retuvo nada.
