Accompaniment in the Storms: Bearing Crosses Together
Acompañamiento en las Tormentas: Cargando las Cruces Juntos
Every marriage will eventually face the storm. Whether it is a sudden medical diagnosis, a prolonged period of financial hardship, infertility, the loss of a child, or intense vocational stress, the vows of "in sickness and in health, for richer, for poorer" will be tested by harsh and unrelenting reality. In an anthropocentric, happiness-centered marriage, these trials are often viewed as failures or as signs that the relationship is fundamentally broken. In a holiness-centered marriage, they are recognized for what they truly are: the Altar of Suffering.
Bearing crosses together is how a married couple actively participates in the Paschal Mystery of Christ. The Catechism teaches that "Christ gives the strength and grace to live marriage in the new dimension of the Reign of God" (CCC 1642). It is in the crucible of severe hardship that the true nature of Hesed—stubborn, loyal, merciful, covenantal love—is forged and proven. The storm does not reveal a broken marriage; it reveals the depth of the covenant that was already there.
Practical Strategies for Navigating the Storm
When the storm hits, couples must lean heavily on the foundational pillars of their relationship to avoid the twin temptations of isolation and despair.
Pray the Spousal Prayer daily, even if it must be prayed through tears. The "Surrender" step of the prayer—"We place into Your Sacred Heart all the tasks left undone, our financial worries, our children, and our anxieties"—is specifically designed for moments of crisis. It is an act of radical trust in God's providence.
Keep the lines of conversation open. Share your fears rather than hiding them. Gottman's research shows that "Turning Away" from a partner's emotional bids—especially during times of stress—is more destructive to the relationship than active conflict. Be present to your spouse's pain, even when you cannot fix it.
Leave small written notes of encouragement for your spouse to fight off despair. A sticky note on the bathroom mirror that says "I am with you" or "We will get through this together" is a powerful act of covenant loyalty. It is Hesed made visible.
Remember that in these dark valleys, you are not just surviving; you are helping each other reach heaven. The cross you carry together is not a punishment; it is a participation in the very love that redeemed the world.
